Econofoods is a grocery chain located in the US which at its peak, had stores in Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Idaho, Colorado, Indiana, Ohio, Utah, Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oregon, Washington, New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Econofoods was formerly a brand of SpartanNash, and was listed among its retail banners until November 2021.

All Econofoods stores in Michigan, two in Wisconsin and four in Kansas were owned and operated by T & C Markets of Brillion, Wisconsin, but were subsequently sold to Minnesota-based grocery retailer, Coborn's in 2021, which rebranded the stores as Tadych's MarketPlace Foods. As of 2022, only 4 stores remained under the Econofoods brand, with one located in Breckenridge, Minnesota and the other in its twin city of Wahpeton, North Dakota, located across the Red River of the North and its tributary, the Bois de Sioux River.[Facts 1]

Econofoods stores are generally full service stores - with a pharmacy, bakery, video rental, floral services, deliveries, and on-site banking facilities. Stores acquired by Coborn's were slated to maintain full-service operations, with Coborn's planning, as of December 2021, to retain the roughly 800 employees affected by the acquisition. Oklahoma-based Heartland Foods also acquired the Econofoods chain in 2022.[Facts 2][1][2]

Econofoods also has five liquor stores in the two cities in which it continues to operate, with two in Wahpeton, ND (Econo Wine and Spirits and Chuck's Offsale), as well as one liquor store in Breckenridge, MN.[Facts 3]

  1. The Econofoods grocery store first established in 1979 in Beatrice Nebraska, then it opened up its first Minnesota, stores in the 1980s and 1990s. In October 1984, the south Econofoods opened on 1200 16th Street Southwest in Rochester Minnesota, then in Winona second store in Sept 1989 and the North store opened in June 1999, then in 2001 opened first Econofoods store in Red Wing Minnesota, then the second store in 2002.
  2. The owner of Econofoods Jim Tadych passed away in 2003 from a plane crash, then the Econofoods went bankrupt in September 2003 then in 2004, the six Econofoods stores including two stores in Rochester closed in June 2004, the North store closed on Tuesday June 8, 2004, and the South store closed a day later. In December of 2004, the Econofoods store got low on customers in Winona Minnesota, then they announced on Saturday January 8, 2005 said they were closing down their store permanently on January 22. Then the Econofoods in Hutchinson closed down in 2013, then the store in Red Wing closed one and other became a family fare. In 2019 the Econofoods in Norwood closed its last store and the main store chain was gone forever.
